Acne Natural Remedy – Exercise?

Don’t lose the big picture here. Exercise is good for your body and good for your skin. It is also great for managing stress, and for circulation. So look at your clothing? Look at where you exercise? Examine the level of exertion? Exercise-related acne is usually caused by what you put on your skin rather than what you do with your body. Let’s explore a few potential culprits:

Make-up. We know you are exercising in part to look good. But wearing make-up during exercise is not a good idea.  Even oil-free and non-pore-clogging make-up clogs pores during exercise, especially if perspiration is present as well. Sunscreen. When you are outdoors always use sunscreen. Skin cancer is worse than Acne! Some people have found temporary improvement in their Acne after brief sun exposure, but that is more likely to be as a result of the fresh air, and not the UV rays. Prolonged exposure will worsen your Acne, on top of the skin damage the sun’s rays will cause. Also, if you are taking Acne medication, this can sometimes cause your skin to be more sensitive to the harmful effects of the sun, so be careful. Of course, look for products that are oil-free and have a protection factor of at least SPF 15 for both UVA and UVB rays. Wash thoroughly after your workout, and then reapply sunscreen if you are going to be outdoors.

Clothing. Lycra and nylon are the enemy if you suffer from body acne. Heat and moisture get trapped right up against your skin, causing a party-like environment for all those Acne-causing bacteria. Better to go with lightweight, loose-fitting cotton. Natural fabrics will allow breathing of the skin, and less friction happens with loose-fitting clothes. There are also some revolutionary fabrics which actually force moisture away from the skin, which you might want to consider if body Acne is a big issue.

Equipment. Keep your equipment clean and dry. Also, try to make sure you avoid friction against the skin where Acne is present or likely. This means having a good fit for all of your equipment, particularly helmets or any other equipment likely to move around and irritate your skin during exercise.

Moisture. Perhaps it stands to reason, but do not sit around in your sweaty clothes or wet bathing suit after your workout. If you can, shower off immediately and change into dry clothes before going home. If this isn’t possible, change into dry clothes and wipe down as well as you can. When toweling sweat off your face, always use a clean towel, and blot gently rather than wipe. Vigorous wiping can irritate your skin, driving make-up and sunscreen deeper into the pores.

Showering. It is best to shower and then dry your skin immediately after working out. You may want to use a medicated exfoliating cleanser, but always be gentle with your skin. Scrubbing harder isn’t going to make you any cleaner, or make your acne go away — and it may actually irritate existing lesions or promote the development of new ones. If you can’t shower right away, you can still curb breakouts by wiping down with medicated pads; keep a few in your gym bag just in case.
