I Want To Learn French
We get emails all the time, such as “I want to learn French, what is the best way?” or “I want to learn French, do you have a recommendation?” or “How to learn French through English?”
What we always tell people is that there are many alternatives. The absolute best way is to move to an area where French is spoken as the primary language.
Think about it, surrounding yourself with the language and going about your everyday life immersed in the language is the best way. But there is no point in recommending that in most cases, as it simply is not generally feasible.

Given that, this is how we might respond to those emails:
Dear I want to learn French,
Thanks for your email. It’s great that you are interested in learning French. There are a number of alternatives to consider – tutors, local French classes, books, CDs, or French language software.
But first consider the time investment that will be required. Are you prepared to spend one hour a day on your French learning? You say “I want to learn French”, but do you have the time to make that investment in learning French?
We don’t ask to put you off. We just want you to understand that if you can invest the time, you can get to the point of being able to hold a decent French conversation in eight weeks or less.

We do not suggest a tutor, or a local French class to learn French Through English. We just don’t believe that they give you the right path to learning French. First, they are not daily, and as we said above, you need daily reinforcement and practice. Second, they really are not getting you any immersion.
Sure, you’ll hold conversations in French with the teacher or tutor, but not frequently. And in the class situation, you’ll be competing with other students for practice time with the teacher.
What you need to do is evaluate the French language software products that are available. And what you need to look for most carefully is the quality of their immersion features.
Ask yourself – “Do they get me thinking in terms of complete sentences and conversation early on, or are they just trying to teach me how to pronounce individual words?”
Because that is the key! Daily structured exposure to French in a manner which gets you thinking in terms of sentences and conversations, not words and verb lessons.
